The Way to Peace Workshops

This two weekend seminar series provides a well-structured first opportunity for Jewish and Arab teenagers to meet and learn about each other.

Objectives:

In keeping with the mission of improving relations between Arabs and Jews in Israel, the following objectives have been set for the program:

Modules

Lectureunder the warm israelian sunAs the project is composed of modules, the following is a description of one module. Each module is composed of three "Beginners Workshops" and two "Continuing Workshops."

"Beginners Workshop" Weekend Retreat

This is the initial inter-group encounter. As soon as a workshop is scheduled, interested youth are invited to register. They are transported on rented buses to the workshop site to the beginners workshop that takes place closest to their home. The participants are divided into groups of 15-20 with two facilitators for each group, one Arab and one Jew. The initial activity focuses on interpersonal and intercultural acquaintance. Then stereotypes and prejudices are examined on the abstract and the experiential levels. Participants are asked to share their past experiences with members of the other group and are encouraged to expose anxieties related to the current encounter. An interpersonal feedback session follows. Then a discussion about ways of being involved in Arab-Jewish conflict resolution takes place. Inter-group cooperative activities are also part of the workshop. Prior to disbanding, participants are encouraged to invite other youth in their communities to participate in future sessions. Finally, participants are invited to attend a "Continuing Workshop."

"Continuing Workshop"

Participants are graduates of various beginners workshops. The workshop begins with an interpersonal Drinking Tschai (tea) next to the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalemacquaintance session. After that, participants deal with issues of identity, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the issue of Palestinian statehood, and problems of inequality in the state of Israel. Before terminating the workshop, participants are invited to become active in one of the organization's other projects such as the Friendship Groups, the Negev Project, seminars, etc. The project described above is one module, several of which may function simultaneously or at discrete times.

Participation of at least 500-550 young Jews and Arabs in the nine "Beginners Workshops" and at least 200-250 youngsters in the "Continuing Workshops." We anticipate that 100 participants of the two workshops will join the organization's other projects.
